Porsche 911 T Targa – 1972

The Porsche 911 is the flagship of Porsche. It is a two-door, high performance grand tourer with independent rear suspension and a rear-engine, as pioneered by its ancestor the Volkswagen Beetle. It’s a striking design from Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, grandson of the Porsche founder.
Since its introduction in 1963, it has undergone continuous technical development, though the design of the exterior has changed little in the past 50 years.

The 911 is among the most successful competition cars ever. In the 1999 the 911 came fifth in the international poll for the award of ‘Car of the Century’. It is one of oldest sport coupés that remained in production continuously. In 2013, at the car’s 50th anniversary, 820,000 had been sold.

During its introduction at the 1963 Frankfurt Car Show the model was named 901. However, Peugeot claimed it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So Porsche changed the name to 911. Production began in 1964 and de 911 had a 2.0 Litre air cooled engine with 130 hp that went from 0-100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.
Over the years the engine’s capacity grew from 2.0 to 2.2 and 2.4 litres. The 911 was available in several different versions: the standard ‘T’, the ‘E’ comfort model and the sporty ‘S’ type.

The in 1967 introduced 911 T (Touring) was the standard version. The engine was a 2.4 liter 6 cylinder with 130 hp. The Targa was introduced as a ‘safety convertible’ for the American market. Due to the serious issue of roll over protection in convertibles, there were plans to ban convertibles. Porsche reacted quickly with the Targa which had a rollover protection hoop. The ban never came, but the Targa was a great success.
