General information about the Mercedes-Benz SL R107
With 18 production years, the Mercedes-Benz SL R107 is the longest-running series produced by Mercedes (after the G-Class) from 1971 to 1989. That says something about the model’s success. At the time, the R107 was Mercedes’ only available convertible and available with various engines from a 2.8-litre 6-cylinder to a 5.6-litre V8. A nice detail of the car are the ribbed rear lights: these were designed to block dirt and keep the lighting optimal. In terms of safety, the car was way ahead of its time: it featured crumple zones and a reinforced windscreen that was supposed to protect the occupants if it flipped over. The 300 SL succeeded the 280 SL in 1985 and is a lot rarer due to its shorter production period. Known for its highly reliable engine, the 300 SL is highly sought after, especially with the optional rear seats. Only about 5% of all R107s produced were produced as 300 SLs (13,742 examples). The vast majority of R107s were equipped with a V8 engine and delivered new to the United States (approx. 2/3rds). The R107 300 SL is still a timeless, reliable and sought-after classic.
