Allard were very popular as production sports car racing in North America, in 1953 Shelby won every race he entered with his Allard
Soon after, if hot rods were invented in England, Sidney Allard would surely have created them.
His first production models appeared in 1946 with “flathead” Ford V-8 power. Soon after, Allard shoehorned the latest American OHV V-8s into his J2 and K2 models. The first Cadillac V-8 obtained from the US was immediately installed into Allard’s own J2 racing car that he entered into the 1950 Tour of Sicily and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Allard finished third overall. Allard also scored highly at Monte Carlo, Watkins Glen, Pebble Beach and Sebring, where his J2s finished first and second in 1950.
Building upon the success of the road-going K1, Allard launched the sleeker K2 in 1950.
A 3.6-liter Ford V-8 was standard, but buyers could also specify Cadillac, Chrysler, Mercury and Oldsmobile V-8 engines.
The K2 was produced until 1952, with just 119 built. The few imported to the US were quickly adopted by road racers and exceptionally successful.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
Strikingly finished in period Pacific Green metallic with a Black interior, this Allard is an original Left Hand Drive example, built with De Dion rear axle, 6 wire wheels (the 2 wheels on the front fenders were a rare option) and delivered with the biggest possible engine, the so-called Cadillac modification.
The Allard was supplied to N.V. Haarlemache Auto Centrale for G.J. Th. A. van Wuck of Asten, the Netherlands.
The Allard Motor Company Record Card confirms these details.
There is no indication of how long Mr. van Wuck kept the Allard but there are all sorts of indication that the Allard drove a variety of rallies in the beginning of it’s life.
By February 1970, the Allard belonged to Mr. Andre Boomkens of The Hague who sold it approximately 14 years later to Mr. Dick van Dijk.
A very successful Dutch businessman and collector.
Mr van Dijk was drawn to this example because it was the only K2 supplied new to his native country.
The collection of Mr. van Dijk was built over many years, for the last eight of which it has been housed at a fifteenth century moated house in Kent. His stunning museum collection of approximately 60 fine historic cars was sold via a British auction house in 2005.
Van Dijk was at that time moving to the United States in order to expand his wood fibre business, Tech-Wood.
The Managing Director of the British auction house told, “This is one of the most significant UK-based collections to come to the market in recent years and is notable for the stunning quality of each and every car. We are delighted to have been chosen to handle this sale.”
Mr. van Dijk was known as a true petrolhead and had the Allard extensively restored by Rod Jolley and Solent Engineering.
The Allard was impressively restored without looking at the expenses. The car was rewired, the body was restored and repainted in a period correct Allard green. The car was retrimmed and attention was paid to its gearbox, ash frame, steering box, front suspension and fuel system etc.
In 2015 the Allard was treated to an extensive engine overhaul including the fitment of new ‘Edelbrock’ 24-stud aluminium cylinder heads.
The body of this Allard is very nice. The optional wheels on the 2 side fenders give the car a strong and cool impressive look.
Due to the restoration the body is in a very nice condition with excellent gaps and fittings.
The paint on the Allard is in a nice and shiny condition and due to the fact that the Allard has mainly been in storage, the car is beautiful without any signs of use.
The metal trim and chrome are excellent throughout, and the wheels are in superb condition as well.
The interior is in a beautiful condition as well.
The leather which is used is the typical English soft leather. After the restoration the car has not been used often and therefore the entire interior including the carpets, the soft top and the leather on the seats are in as new condition.
All meters, knobs and gauges are also restored and are in as new condition.
ENGINE / TRUNK
The engine compartment and trunk are both extremely clean and well-detailed. If the bonnet is opened it is immediately clear that the car has undergone a very serious restoration.
Equally suitable for shows and vintage racing events, this Allard K2 is a great sport car to drive, as well as very effective in competition.
If you should go with this car for a drive you will be very impressed. It all starts when you switch on the engine. The sound is impressive and very nice.
The large V8 engine runs beautifully.
The steering and overall handling of the Allard is great. We can compare the handling with a Jaguar XK but the engine is off-course much bigger so the experience is even more impressive.
Allards were immensely popular in production sports car racing in North America, providing drivers such as Tom Cole, Zora Duntov, John Fitch and Carroll Shelby with numerous successes.
Indeed, in 1953 Shelby won every race he entered with his Allard.
With just 119 examples built, this beautiful Allard is ready for its next owner to drive it as intended, with great enthusiasm.
