Museu do Caramulo
Museu do Caramulo
Open to the public for more than 60 years (1953) and visited by more than a million people, the Caramulo Museum houses in its collection several collections and exhibitions, starting with the building itself, commissioned to the architect Alberto Cruz and built around a cloister of the XVIII century. It was the second construction carried out on purpose to be a museum.
Inside, the Caramulo Museum presents its Art Collection, with more than 500 pieces, ranging from Ancient Egypt to Picasso and Dali, as well as the various aspects of art such as textiles, tapestries, silverware, sculpture, ceramics, painting, furniture, glass, jewellery, archaeology to contemporary art.
The museum also presents to its visitors the largest collection of cars, motorcycles and bicycles on display in Portugal, covering 150 years of engineering history. This collection features a huge variety of vehicles, ranging from an 1899 Peugeot to the 1990 Reynard 903, with which Michael Schumacher won the Macau Grand Prix.
Finally, the museum permanently maintains an exhibition of miniatures and antique toys with more than 3,000 pieces, showing various eras of toys over more than a century.
