Based on the Fiat 128, Fiat began developing a smaller model, the Fiat 127, in 1971 . This model’s design better matched the progressive technology and was rewarded with the title ‘ Car of the Year ‘ in 1972.

In 1977 the 127 was renewed and modified. The 127 was brought in line with the Fiat 126 and 128, which have also been renewed. A new engine was also added, namely a 1,050cc. This was not developed by Fiat in Italy, but purchased from the subsidiary in Brazil.

This 1,050cc engine was available in two versions. The 50 hp version was in the L and CL. A 70 hp version of this engine was also released in 1978 as the 127 Sport went through life. This Sports version was available in two colors: black with orange striping and orange with black striping. A matte black checkered grille and a matte black front and roof spoiler, the glossy black roof moldings, standard tinted windows and the oval racing mirrors made it clear from the outside that it was a different version than the lesser gods from the family! The interior was drastically improved by two black semi-bucket seats with attached headrest and finished with orange accents, a tachometer, a sports steering wheel, black headliner and an oil pressure gauge and clock were included in the center of the dashboard. This version was also equipped with H4 headlights.

In 1981 these Sports versions were slightly modified. The characteristic striping disappeared, just like the orange version. Instead, a red and a gray-blue metallic version were returned. The black and orange interior lining made way for a block motif. Everything else remained the same until November 1981.

Then the third series of the 127 appeared. In fact, nothing more than a second series that was decorated with plastic panels. Larger shield bumpers, wide bumper strips for the Special and for the Super and Sport large cover plates were added for the bottom of the doors that merged into fender flares around the wheel arches. Headlights and taillights became larger in size. The interior was freshened up again with different seating furniture and a completely new dashboard. A larger version of the Brazilian 1,050 engine, the 1,301 cc, was introduced for this model.

The 1,301 cc and 75 hp Sport was equipped with a five-speed gearbox and a completely different interior with open headrests. The tailgate was fitted with an extra spoiler under the window.

The third series lasted exactly one year, in November 1982 the curtain finally fell on the Italian version of the Fiat 127. The last copies were sold until 1983, but then it was really over for this extremely successful model. from Fiat. In January 1983 the 127 was replaced by the Fiat Uno . A fourth series of the 127 (‘Unificata’) from Brazil was then available in some European markets until 1987 (in the Netherlands until mid-1986). In Latin America the 127 remained in production until 1995.
