The Austin Healey Sprite Designed by Gerry Coker to make sports car driving more affordable, the Sprite went into production in March 1958 at MG’s Abingdon plant. The new car was officially introduced in Monte Carlo a few months later, just before the Monte Carlo Rally, underlining the brand’s sporting intentions for the new car. The one-piece body featured a distinctive rear-hinged combined bonnet and wings, topped by twin ‘frog-eye’ headlamps, ensuring instant recognition and the now-familiar nickname.
It is a 1959 Austin Healey Sprite Mk 1 “Frog Eye”. This car had its first registration on 28-02-1959 and was delivered in Texas. The Healey came to the Netherlands in the 1990s and was bought by the previous owner in 1996. At the time of purchase, the Sprite had already been made tight and sprayed in the current green paint.
After the moment of purchase, the car is built with new and revised parts.
– Gear box
– New fuel tank
After several years of enjoyable rides, the Healey was sold in 2003. The buyer has also traveled many joyful kilometers over the years with this. This continued until 2016, when the previous owner bought it back.
In the years between 2003 and 2016, the necessary maintenance had already been carried out on the Healey. After the moment of sale to the previous owner, the largest part of the Healey has been disassembled, overhauled and rebuilt.
The original 998 cc engine is fitted with new cylinder liners and (original) standard pistons. A slightly faster camshaft is fitted and gives 5 hp more power than standard. New bearings, oil pump, water pump and pressure plate. The engine is also equipped with a crankshaft modification against oil leaks. All gaskets and seals have of course also been replaced. The fuel tank is nice and clean. All meters work. An electric petrol pump is fitted. This example still has the original hood and the car has never been welded.
The brakes have been overhauled all around, including a new master cylinder,
wheel brake cylinders and brake hoses. All axles and gearbox are equipped with new seals.
The beautiful MiniLite rims are in good condition and fitted with Michelin tires. An intact hood, side windows and tonneau cover are present. Furthermore, the chrome work has been renewed and a new front bumper has been fitted.
The “Frogeye” has proven its willpower when it has covered many beautiful and pleasant kilometers in both Sardinia and Austria.
In short, the car is in beautiful condition. The black leather upholstery with its white accents still has a very nice image and, together with the entire interior, still looks very neat. There is a photo report available where you can see what happened. There are several invoices available that also provide more insight into his history.
A lot of love has been put into this beautiful example and he is looking for a new owner who can continue this. This 2-seater is packed with fun!
We can also arrange the export documents and transport for you. An insurance for 2 weeks is also possible!
